Check Whether the Aerator Is Exposed or Hidden
An exposed aerator has a visible housing at the tip of the faucet and can often be unscrewed by hand.
A recessed or “cache” aerator sits inside the spout and normally requires a matching aerator key. Trying pliers first can deform the housing or scratch the faucet finish, so identifying the design before removal is important.
Before beginning, close the sink drain or place a towel over it. Aerators contain small screens, washers, and flow-control components that are easy to lose.
Removing a Standard Threaded Aerator
Grip the aerator housing with your fingers and turn it counterclockwise when viewed from below the outlet.
If mineral buildup has made it difficult to move, wrap the housing with a thick cloth or rubber strip before using a tool. Apply only enough force to loosen the aerator.
Once removed, keep the washer and internal screens in their original order. Rinse loose particles away. Mineral deposits can be softened using a cleaner compatible with the aerator material.
Avoid pushing sharp metal objects through the small openings because this can damage the screens and change the water pattern.
Removing a Recessed Faucet Aerator
For a hidden aerator, insert the correct key into the slots inside the spout and turn counterclockwise. The aerator key should engage fully before force is applied.
A poorly fitting tool can damage the contact points and make future removal much more difficult.
If the aerator remains stuck, avoid applying heavy torque to the faucet spout itself. Excessive force may damage internal connections.

An aerator affects more than the visual appearance of the stream. Thread accuracy, sealing, flow rate, outlet geometry, water pressure, and local performance requirements all influence the finished faucet.

Before Reinstalling the Aerator
With the aerator removed, briefly flush the faucet into the basin to clear loose debris from the spout.
Reassemble the screens in the correct order, make sure the washer sits flat, and screw the aerator back in without cross-threading. Hand tightening is normally sufficient unless the product specification states otherwise.
Run the water again and check both the stream pattern and the area around the aerator for leakage.
